Naga Traditional Stone Pulling ceremony held at Mezoma

The event is being organized to commemorate 142 years of the Anglo-Naga peace treaty which concluded on March twenty-seven 1880.

The traditional stone-pulling ceremony of the Angami tribe was held at Mezoma village, Kohima Nagaland today. The event is being organized to commemorate 142 years of the Anglo-Naga peace treaty which concluded on March twenty-seven 1880.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in his address said that it was a blessed day for everyone to participate in the stone-pulling ceremony, which is keeping alive the Naga traditions. He said that the Nagaland State Government have started the hornbill festival to preserve and conserve traditions and culture, and identity, bringing all the tribes together as one Festival of Festivals. 

Shri Neiphiu Rio said that “the peace treaty today is 142 years and in memory of this peace treaty, this stone pulling is being observed and this is a welcoming step as it revives the friendship”, he said. 

Further, he added that Mezoma can be termed a historical village and hopes that this peace treaty spread among the Naga people so that we forgive one another and let’s move forward and preserve our identity and traditions for the future.

Earlier, the traditional blessing was proposed by Rovigwelhou Chiisi, Gaonbura of Mezoma village, followed by stone pulling ceremony and cultural presentation.
