BHARAT: In a decisive response to a wave of disinformation originating from across the border, the Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check Unit has debunked a fresh series of fake narratives aimed at spreading panic and confusion among Indian citizens. As of 6:30 a.m. on 9 May 2025, the unit had fact-checked and publicly countered seven misleading videos circulated within a short span between 10:00 p.m. on May 8 and early this morning.
The campaign which appears to be coordinated, saw multiple social media handles particularly those linked to Pakistan spreading false content designed to instill fear and distrust within India. While such efforts are not new, the volume and timing suggest a deliberate attempt at psychological warfare.
Among the most prominent fakes was a video falsely claiming that a Pakistani military unit had destroyed an Indian Army post. The clip, which was circulated widely by unverified and fake accounts, even referenced a fictional 20 Raj Battalion a unit that does not exist in the Indian Army. PIB swiftly investigated and confirmed the video was staged and fabricated.
This is part of a coordinated propaganda push aimed at misleading the public and manipulating perceptions PIB said via its official X handle.
The PIB Fact Check Unit has continued to act swiftly to verify claims and counter misinformation, urging citizens to verify content before sharing and to rely on trusted sources for information especially during sensitive times.
Conclusion:
Disinformation is not just a foreign threat it's a domestic challenge as well. The responsibility to curb its spread lies not only with government fact-checking bodies but also with media houses and everyday users. The battle against false narratives is ongoing, and only collective vigilance can protect the integrity of public discourse.(PR)
