Mizoram State Government alert: Synthetic wax found in Imported Apples
This wax is injurious to health as it cannot be absorbed easily by the human body which can lead to serious stomach ailments.
The Mizoram State Government has issued a letter alerting citizens about the synthetic wax found in many imported apples in the state.
The State Government's Food and Administration Wing of Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) detected waxed apples during routine checks of imported fruits and vegetables at the state border.
The letter issued by the department said that many apples imported from outside the state were covered with wax and were unfit for human consumption.
According to the notice, the apple is to be eaten by washing it in hot water or peeling the outer layer.
Honey wax is commonly used for apple coating to prevent water loss and increase its shelf life. However, sometimes paraffin wax is used to maintain the shine of apples at a lower cost. This wax is injurious to health as it cannot be absorbed easily by the human body which can lead to serious stomach ailments.
