The alliance between JDU and BJP has not yet been agreed for the Uttar Pradesh elections. In view of this, JDU had announced on Friday that it would release its first list of candidates on Saturday, and today JDU alone released the list of candidates on 26 seats on which it will contest.

JDU has said that the party will field its candidates in at least 51 constituencies. JDU President Lalan Singh said that his party leader and Union Minister RCP Singh had initially spoken of the BJP agreeing to the alliance and if JDU had not waited so long after that, it would have gone to Uttar Pradesh. I would have contested more seats with more strength.

He mentioned that it was RCP Singh who was authorized by the JD (U) leadership to talk to BJP leaders and no other person was a part of it. Lalan Singh said that his party waited for so long at the behest of the Union Minister and now it is going ahead with the decision to contest independently as BJP President JP Nadda publicly stated that his party in Uttar Pradesh The party's allies are Apna Dal and Nishad Party and they made no mention of JDU.

RCP Singh is considered close to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and is a prominent JD(U) leader, but there has been speculation about his declining importance in the party after becoming the only member of the party to find a place in the Modi government. He was the president of JDU and his becoming a Union minister paved the way for Lalan Singh to hold the position.

Lalan Singh said that his party has authorized the party's Uttar Pradesh unit Chief Anoop Patel to decide the names of candidates etc. to contest more than 51 seats. Rohaniya, which falls in the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency, represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is also included in the list of seats released by the JDU president for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.

However, Lalan Singh also said that his party's decision to contest elections independently in UP will have no bearing on its relations with the BJP in Bihar. JDU has contested elections in many states without forming an alliance with the BJP. Lalan Singh said that his party had won seven seats in Arunachal Pradesh in the last assembly elections, but the BJP later brought six of them to its fold. Voting for 403 seats in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly will begin in seven phases from February 10.
