Over 20 organizations in Assam have threatened to launch protests against the construction of a mega-dam on the Subansiri river on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
Giving information about the protest, Assam Jatiyattabdi Yuva Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) President Palash Changmai has said that the protest will start from September 20.
The AJYCP is strongly opposing the construction of the mega-dam, saying the project would be a major disaster for the people living in the downstream areas.
In 2003, the Center granted permission for the construction of the Subansiri Lower Hydro Electric Project, which was started in 2005. But the project was shelved in December 2011 after widespread protests by anti-dam groups.
The deadline for completion of the country's largest hydroelectric project was set for 2014, but it still lies in ruins with no progress so far.
