Bangladesh: Firing with Hindus in Durga Pandal, vandalism with idols

As per reports, several incidents of attacks on Durga Puja pandals and idols have been reported from Bangladesh after which government has warned of tough action. The violence was triggered after some posts on social media claimed besmirching of Quran at a puja venue. 

Violence by religious fundamentalists after Facebook post went viral. A Facebook post purportedly by Hindus insulting the Quran went viral on social media on Wednesday night, following which religious fanatics ransacked several Durga pandals. Not only this, when they were opposed, they opened fire, which resulted in the painful death of three people.

While denying the claims of insult of Quran, Shibu Prasad Dutta, general secretary of Kamila Mahanagar Puja Committee said that someone put a copy of Quran in a Durga Puja pavilion in Nanua Dighir Par early in the morning and the guard was sleeping at that time.

In a letter to PM Narendra Modi Shubhendu Adhikari said, “I would like to draw your attention to the vandalism of idols in puja pandals during Durga Puja in Bangladesh. Radical forces have become accustomed to attacking the Sanatani community in Bangladesh. During Durga Puja, when the procession was going out, the extremist forces broke the Durga Puja pandals and idols.

Many Sanatani people who have been victims of attacks are suffering in Bangladesh. Presently the condition of Sanatani people living in Bangladesh is very pathetic. Many of them have crossed the border and settled in West Bengal. They are continuously making a plea to stand with the suffering Sanatani people of Bangladesh. I urge you to take immediate and necessary steps in this regard, so that the Sanatani people living in Bangladesh can get relief, the letter added.
